Malaysia's iconic cultural celebration is back. Citrawarna 2026, also known as Colours of Malaysia, will return to enliven Dataran Merdeka (Merdeka Square) in Kuala Lumpur for three days from 24 to 26 July 2026. Held in conjunction with the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign, the festival brings together performers from across the country in a vibrant showcase of the nation's diverse cultures, traditions, and heritage. Best of all, entry is free for the public.
The Rhythm. The Soul. The Nation.
This year's edition carries the theme "The Rhythm. The Soul. The Nation.", positioning Kuala Lumpur as the main stage for celebrating Malaysia's cultural identity. The historic heart of the city, Dataran Merdeka, just a short walk or ride from Bukit Bintang, will be transformed into a dynamic, multi-day celebration of music, dance, food, and art.
First inaugurated by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) in 1999, Citrawarna has historically involved thousands of performers ranging from professional troupes to school and university students. Past editions have featured massive decorated floats, fireworks displays, traditional wear showcases, and of course, an abundance of Malaysian food.
Four Signature Experiences
The three-day celebration is structured around four main segments, each offering a distinct window into Malaysian culture:
1. Colours of Parade (Citra Perarakan), The headline event on 25 July, featuring a spectacular cultural procession combining music, dance, and storytelling by contingents from across every state in Malaysia. This grand showcase highlights unity, creativity, and national identity, transforming Merdeka Square into a vibrant stage.
2. Colours of Flavour (Citra Rasa), A celebration of Malaysia's rich culinary heritage with traditional dishes and authentic gastronomic experiences. Expect heritage food from across the archipelago, from nasi lemak and satay to regional specialties rarely found in malls.
3. Colours of Culture (Citra Budaya), Traditional performances, community-based activities, and cultural expressions reflecting the diversity of Malaysia's people. This segment showcases the breadth of the nation's performing arts traditions.
4. Colours of Art (Citra Seni), Local handicrafts and live art demonstrations by players in the local creative industry, giving visitors a chance to see artisans at work and purchase unique pieces directly.
Part of Visit Malaysia 2026
Citrawarna 2026 is organised by Tourism Malaysia in collaboration with Yes Travel & Holidays Sdn. Bhd., with support from Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and Warisan Kuala Lumpur. The event is expected to generate significant economic impact through increased domestic and international visitor arrivals, creating opportunities for hoteliers, tour operators, and local traders.
Tourism Malaysia has invited hotels and accommodation providers to offer special room rates and promotional packages throughout the event period, encouraging longer stays and increased tourism activity in the city.
