Bukit Bintang to Get Its First Permanent Mosque
Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur's busiest shopping and nightlife district, is finally getting a permanent mosque. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Hasan announced on 19 June 2026 that a new mosque with capacity for more than 1,500 worshippers will be built on a 5.6-acre site directly in front of the Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) financial district, with completion targeted for early 2027. The project, named Masjid Warisan, fills a gap that has seen the area without a dedicated Friday prayer mosque despite the thousands of workers, residents, and visitors who pass through daily.
The announcement came after Friday prayers at Outreach Oasis Bukit Bintang, a co-working space on Jalan Imbi that has been converted into a temporary prayer venue while permanent facilities are being developed. Zulkifli led the prayers alongside Al-Bukhary Mosque imam Syeed Muhammad Lutfi Wan Yusuf. The temporary space is a stopgap that the new mosque is designed to retire.
Two Projects, One Site
The announcement actually covers two distinct projects. The immediate one is a mosque housed in the former Bangunan Yayasan Selangor building, whose owner has agreed to waqf the property for religious use despite its significant commercial value on one of KL's priciest strips. The Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) has agreed to fund the build. That building alone will accommodate more than 1,500 worshippers.
The larger, longer-term project is Masjid Warisan itself, a landmark mosque planned on 5.6 acres of land facing TRX. Zulkifli said the design is intended to complement the skyline of the TRX Tower and the surrounding development corridor. The project involves MAIWP, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), and other relevant agencies, and was first officially announced on 22 January 2026 before the detailed site confirmation in June.
Why Bukit Bintang Has Waited This Long
The Bukit Bintang commercial district, anchored by Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, Fahrenheit88, Sungei Wang, Lot 10, and Berjaya Times Square, has long lacked a mosque specifically serving Friday prayers for the local community and visitors. The area's Muslim workforce, retail staff, and tourists have relied on ad hoc arrangements, the nearest dedicated mosque being Al-Bukhary Mosque further out. Zulkifli noted that the lack of dedicated worship facilities in a major commercial and tourism hub of this scale was a gap the project is meant to address directly.
The temporary Friday prayer space at Outreach Oasis Bukit Bintang on Jalan Imbi opened on the same day as the announcement, 19 June 2026, and will continue to operate while the permanent mosque is under construction. The minister framed it as the start of a new chapter for Muslim residents and visitors in the area.
What This Means for the District
For Bukit Bintang, a mosque with a 1,500-worshipper capacity sitting opposite TRX changes the rhythm of the district on Fridays. Prayer times will draw foot traffic away from the malls for an hour or two and concentrate it around the new site. For visitors planning a Friday trip to Pavilion KL or Lot 10, the new mosque means a proper jumuah option within walking distance of the major malls, rather than the current arrangement of using suraus or travelling out to Al-Bukhary. The project's location in front of TRX also places it on the connection between Bukit Bintang and the new financial district, which itself opened its retail and residential phases through 2025 and 2026.
Construction on the immediate mosque, the Yayasan Selangor building conversion, is expected to begin soon with completion targeted for early 2027. The larger Masjid Warisan on the TRX-facing 5.6 acres is a longer-horizon landmark project with no fixed completion date yet published.
